We take reservations by form or by telephone. If we cannot fit you, we will say so plainly rather than crowd the house.

The house.

Higashiyama, on the lane behind the Kōdai-ji wall. There is no sign — the gate is dark cedar with a single iron ring, and it is unlocked from seven.

Kiyomizu-Gojō on the Keihan line, eleven minutes on foot uphill. Gion-Shijō is fifteen and prettier.

Six spaces behind the house, reserved when you book. The lane is narrow and one-way from the north.

From Kōdai-ji, follow the stone wall east and take the second unmarked lane. Dark cedar gate, iron ring.

The first ten minutes.

Shoes come off at the genkan. Your phone and watch go into a box that is locked and handed back at the desk when you leave — this applies to everybody, including us.

You will be shown the changing room, the hall and the rest deck, and asked three questions about your body. Then you are left alone. Nobody will check on you, and nobody will announce your treatment time.

If you need anything at all, there is a small brass bell in every room. Ring it and someone comes.

Arrive at least an hour before any treatment. Guests who arrive ten minutes before their slot get a shorter version of a lesser experience, and we would rather rebook you.

Practical

Before you come.

Yes, at the desk and among most of the therapists. Reservations and correspondence in English, Japanese and Danish.

The ground floor, the garden bath, the tatami room and two treatment rooms are step-free. The main bathing hall has four steps and a handrail; tell us and Tomo will arrange the garden bath instead.

You can, though there is not a great deal to do. The garden room serves tea to anybody who asks, without charge, between ten and four.

Yes, unconditionally, in every part of the house. We made that decision on the day we opened.

A light kaiseki lunch is included with any treatment day and available otherwise at ¥4,200. It is served in the garden room at the time you ask for it, not on a sitting.
